Willian has dedicated a heartbreaking message to his mother after the Chelsea midfielder revealed she is suffering from cancer.
The Blues winger has made a solid start to the 2016/17 Premier League season after the South American netted Chelsea’s second goal in a 3-0 victory over Burnley at Stamford Bridge in their last game before the international break.
Willian was named Chelsea’s player of the year last season after the 28-year-old midfielder netted 11 times in 49 games in all competitions under manager Jose Mourinho and Guus Hiddink.
However, the former Shakhtar Donetsk forward, who moved to Chelsea ahead of interest from Liverpool in 2014, has also been contending with his mother’s two-and-a-half year battle with cancer.
Willian posted the above photo on his Instagram page and wrote the following caption: “Today was the day to visit and spend the whole day on the other side of the this warrior.
“There are two and a half years of great struggle, surgeries, sessions of chemo and admissions are not easy, but you’re being very strong.
“And it’s that strength that I have sought all the days, when I get up for work. “Monitor your battle from afar, it wasn’t what I wanted and if I could I would be twenty four hours by your side giving you all the love, affection and strength for you to get out of this, but unfortunately my job does not allow me [to].”
The South American forward has netted 20 times in 142 games in all competitions for the west London side since his big-money switch to Chelsea from Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala in 2014.
Chelsea will make the trip to Swansea City in their next Premier League game at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
