£35m Mustafi All Set For His Emirates Debut
The German World Cup winner joined the club on Tuesday from Spanish side, Valencia for a fee in excess of £35million, and is expected to make his debut next weekend when the Gunners entertain Southampton at the Emirates Stadium.
Explaining why the 24-year-old was at the top of his target list, Wenger said: "We needed a centre back because of the long-term injuries we have. He has already played in Italy, he has already played in Spain and he has played with the German national team.
''He is a very intelligent boy, that was important in my decision as well.
''He is very focused, and he knows the rigorous climate of the Premier League and how much you have to fight for every game.
''I know he can play with the ball as well.
''That is important for us, and all this quality made me decide to try and get him. The player wanted to join us as well, and I think he will hopefully be happy here and will enhance our squad. It puts us in a good position. He is certainly conscious of what is expected of him.
''We will not have a bad surprise and that shows you that he is not scared to take a challenge on,” Wenger said.
Arsenal also wrapped up the signing of Deportivo La Coruña striker, Lucas Perez on Tuesday.
The Spaniard, 27, scored 17 goals in 37 games last season and is seen as a bargain by many after moving to north London in a deal believed to be worth around £17million.
Describing what he brings to the club, Perez said: "I’m a pacy player. I like to link up and combine with my team-mates and play one-twos to work a shot.
''I don’t want to just put myself in a box. "I hope that the Arsenal fans can see for themselves and enjoy watching me.
'' I’m really excited. I want to show what I’m about, and get stuck into playing and performing well.”
The biggest shock of the transfer window, meanwhile, saw Jack Wilshere join Bournemouth on loan.
The 24-year-old rejected offers from Crystal Palace and Serie A sides AC Milan and Roma in favour of the Cherries.
