SSANU / FG Argue Over University Demonstration Schools Funding
The Senior Staff Association of
Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has accused the Federal Government of
violating an earlier agreement to fund university staff schools.
The agitation from the SSANU
resulted from a circular which was distributed by the Nigeria
University Commission (NUC) to all universities, stating that the
Federal Government will henceforth stop funding university staff
schools.
One of the reasons for the
agitation according to the circular is that the schools are private
business of the universities, making profit for the institutions and
therefore should be funded by the universities.
The efforts was also in line
with governments desire to reduce cost of governance.
However, SSANU argues that the
circular was against the agreement that the government had signed
with the union in 2009.
They also accused the NUC and
the Salaries and Wages Commission of misleading the government on the
true nature of the staff schools in the universities.
SSANU believes that the NUC and
the Salaries and Wages Commission are responsible for the move to
withdraw funding.
